Where search is going
Ranking is no longer the same as being read.
Google now puts an AI answer above the results. ChatGPT and Perplexity answer without sending anyone anywhere. An article can hold the exact position it always held and earn a fraction of the clicks, and most tools will tell you it is failing.
Written to be quotable
Answer engines don’t rank pages, they build an answer out of passages. So every article is scored on whether a section still makes sense lifted out on its own, and whether it carries figures, dates and named sources specific enough to quote. Kept separate from the SEO score, because the two pull in different directions and one number would hide which needs work.
Knows losing from being answered
When clicks fall but impressions and position hold, the page hasn’t gone stale. Something answered above it. EditDesk says so and leaves it alone, instead of queueing a rewrite that would risk the very position earning the citation. Clicks on their own cannot tell you that.
Not invisible by accident
One inherited line in a client’s robots.txt can block the crawlers behind ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews. The site carries on ranking, never gets cited, and no report anywhere shows the absence. One click checks it, and it won’t nag you about blocking training crawlers, which is a fair choice that costs nothing.
No SEO theatre
We don’t bolt an FAQ onto every article because someone said AI likes questions. The research says it makes no difference to whether a page gets used.
